Mr. Knittel has a background in physics and over a decade of experience as an engineer and patent practitioner in the San Francisco Bay Area; working as a patent agent in patent boutique law firms, and as a patent attorney in the San Francisco office of Townsend and Townsend and Crew L.L.P.
Prior to joining the legal profession, Mr. Knittel was an optical engineer with Foveon, Inc. in Santa Clara, a spin-off from National Semiconductor Corp., where he developed optical components and optical testing and control systems and software for testing and characterization systems for imaging chips. Mr. Knittel has also worked as optical engineering consultant where he has had experience with a wide range of optical and photonic projects including lighting and signaling (i.e. traffic control signals), lens and optical component design, manufacturing, and quality assurance (i.e. imaging and color control systems), and photonic component testing, characterization, and calibration of electronic and photonics components (i.e. CCD and LCOS imager chips). Mr. Knittel is also well versed in color and color reproduction sciences.
Mr. Knittel focuses his practice on patent preparation and prosecution, including the optical, electronic, computer, and software system (credit and debit card transactions and processing) fields. Mr. Knittel has also prosecuted cases in technical areas including; mechanical devices and motion capture and computer animation.
